On Tuesday afternoon we went to pick up our rental car and met Sailing-Youtube-Famous-Dude from the boat Delos. Not sure anyone who reads this will know him, (I didn’t) but apparently for cruisers it is a big deal. Tiffany asked me to take a photo of her with him when he was done signing his contract for the rental car he happened to pick up at the same time and place as us.
We then drove to the marina to pick up the rest of the family and went to the chandler to get the final and last part for Rafaels home-made watermaker. And we were successful! Now he has the last remaining piece he needs to make the boat self sufficient to quite a large extent as they now can make drinking water out of seawater by using power provided by their solarpanels. This was an essential part of kit for the atlantic crossing.
After that successful visit to the shop we drove to the north of the island on a small road trip to visit a viewpoint from where we could overlook most of the island of Lanzarote now lying south of us. We also saw the small island of La Graciosa where we had come from and the anchorage where we had stayed just a few days before. I didn’t bring my camera as I thought we were only going to the store but I got some phone pictures off the fam. I've got so far)
The next day we went on a roadtrip to the south of the island with the other 2 boats, Vesna and Otoka. We went to the Timanfaya national park where we saw the volcanoes from up close. There was also a restaurant where they grilled chicken over the heat of the volcano which was big on the “to see list” of the non-vegetarian rest of my group.
I had been here before on my trip to lanzarote 2 years ago, but it was still nice to see it all again. You’re not allowed to drive in the park by yourself but you have to take a bustour if you want to see more than just the parking lot but it was still very impressive.
The guys (mainly Isabell and Tiffany) really wanted to go and ride the camels, so we drove back out of the park past the long queue of cars waiting to get into the park and waited our turn for the camels. I talked myself out of it this time and acted as the family photographer instead ;) Some of the other kids and adults of our group also went for the ride and we who stayed behind had a good time watching the other camels while we waited.
Afterwards we drove down to playa blanca and visited the playa papageyo, where there was a nice anchorage the other guys wanted to check out. After that short stint on a dirtroad we drove back to playa blanca and had some lunch. We then went north again to visit the salt production factory by the sea and the green lagoon by the village el golfo I had seen on my last trip here. It was a long day of driving but we had a good time!
